Try These South Florida Eateries for the Holidays

Another month means another opportunity to highlight the best places to eat in South Florida. With the holiday season in full swing, these suggestions are great for a day with the family, friends, or any snowbirds looking to experience a slice of the 305.

Once again making the list is Stubborn Seed, one of two new restaurants launched by a former Top Chef winner. At Stubborn Seed, you can enjoy food items such as herb-roasted wagyu, celery root braised in citrus, and a selection of classic desserts. Located in the South of Fifth area, its address is 101 Washington Avenue.

Also making a repeat appearance is Lutum on Bay Road. Launched by the same people responsible for El Grito next door, Lutum diners can try a broad menu showcasing Miami and its status as a cultural melting pot. Try a different burger each week or go for something a little out of the ordinary like falafel Scotch eggs.

Recently showcased on Deco Drive, 1-800-LUCKY is the first food hall to ever emerge in Miami. Diners can try food from seven distinct Asian-inspired eateries, including Japanese ice cream cones in a fish-shape. Besides the food, there is also a convenience store and a record store. 1-800-LUCKY closes at 3 am daily.

Additionally, the three bathroom unit was recently renovated and it comes fully furnished. Some of the residential features include a den, gorgeous vistas of the water, an ultra modern kitchen also with views of the water, huge walk-in closets, and much more.

Continuum South Tower boasts a number of fantastic amenities such as a resort-style pool, a fully equipped fitness center, easy access to the beach, and lots more. Besides the beach, the owner/resident of Unit #2305 will also be within walking distance of Ocean Drive and South Beach mainstays like the perennially popular Joe’s Stone Crab.

The South Beach Loops Debuts next Month

Miami Beach will welcome November with the inauguration of the South Beach Loop, officially adding the final piece to the city’s complimentary trolley service. This new line will serve as the replacement for Miami Beach and Miami-Dade Transit’s South Beach Local Alton-West Loop. With the new route, it will be possible to get to 88thStreet to South Pointe Drive with as little as a single transfer, significantly reducing the amount of travel time.

Once the South Beach Loop is up and running, locals tourists will be able to visit the numerous retail, the parks, beaches, libraries, eateries, and even Mount Sinai Hospital using the free trolley service. The South Beach Loop will operate throughout the entire year, with trolleys running no more than fifteen minutes apart. On Sundays, the trolleys will begin running at 8 am until midnight. Hours of operation are from 6 am to midnight on weekdays as well as Saturdays.

Besides the new South Beach Loop, Miami Beach is also tweaking the North Beach, Middle Beach, and Collins Link trolley routes. Low floor trolleys will join the existing fleet of trolleys to improve accessibility.

The South Beach Loop inauguration will be held on November at 10 am outside of Miami Beach City Hall.

Get Ready for the New and Improved Bass Museum

Are you a fan of art museums? If so, you may be well aware of the closure of The Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach. After closing its doors way back in 2015, the 53-year-old contemporary art museum is once again opening its doors on Sunday, boasting new art spaces and even a slightly tweaked name just in time for the arrival of Art Basel.

Now known simply as The Bass, the city-owned museum underwent a $10+ million expansion and revamp intended to shift it towards cutting-edge contemporary art. The people behind the project are aiming to boost the museum’s appeal as more and more people associate Miami Beach with a contemporary art vibe.

Existing work like the massive “Coronation of the Virgin” by Botticelli isn’t going anywhere, but future visitors to The Bass will find it in an enhanced gallery space alongside a rotating collection of works by current artists. The juxtaposition of classical and contemporary may help give The Bass a unique edge in an otherwise crowded space.

Other highlights at the revamped Bass include an expanded lobby and reception area, a glassed-in court to be used for events and art installations, a large 20+ foot glass wall framed by a pair of trees, and much more.

Try These Great Miami Beach Restaurants

Every so often it’s worth taking a moment to mention some of the best places to try in and around Miami Beach. Whether you’re a longtime local or someone who plans on moving to South Beach, you may want to give these places a try the next time you’re trying to decide where to eat.

If you’ve spent any time in New York, you may be familiar with Artichoke Basille’s Pizza. The popular NYC hangout recently debuted right here in South Beach, in Ricky’s South Beach to be precise. Have an entire pie or just a slice of the Sicilian Pizza, Margherita Pizza, or the namesake pizza which includes not only artichokes but also spinach, pecorino romano cheese, and more.

Lutum over on Bay Road is a product of the team behind the mezcaleria known as El Grito. For those interested, the menu includes plenty of food options inspired by Miami’s richly distinct array of cultures. This means you can try everything from falafel Scotch eggs to a good old-fashioned burger.

Not far from Lutum on West Avenue is Soul Tavern, a vegetarian gastropub located in the area of Sunset Harbour. Have some burgers and fries or pizza all without the usual meat or try some of the cold-pressed juices and Chinese herbal elixirs.

Miami’s Musically-Themed Labor Day Weekend Events

The upcoming Labor Day weekend means many of us will be enjoying a much-needed extra day off. As is the case in South Florida, lots of events will be going on to celebrate the holiday, and we’re here to highlight a few of them.

Tomorrow, the venerable American rock band Goo Goo Dolls will perform at the Bayfront Park Amphitheater as part of their Long Way Home Summer Tour. The band is perhaps best known for its major hits “Name” and “Iris” released in 1994 and 1998, respectively.

In keeping with the music theme, the WeTheKeyDJs Conference is going down this weekend. If you’re a fan of watching talented individuals work their turntable magic, some of the most popular DJs in the world will be spinning tunes at the Fontainebleau Hotel.

If you happen to be anywhere near Key Biscayne on Sunday, you may wish to check out the Tequila Bay Music Festival being held at Miami Marine Stadium. A number of country artists including famous names like Montgomery Gentry and Kip Moore will be performing. Don’t forget to try the various varieties of tequila at the Casa Tequila.

What exciting plans do you have for the long weekend?

Happy Hour with a View

It may only be the middle of the week but many of us work hard to make ends meet, and we all deserve some time to just kick back and relax. If you’re the type of person who likes to unwind at a happy hour, these suggestions may do just the trick the next time you’re in the mood to try a new spot with some nice views.

The Future of Ocean Terrace

After extensive planning that took over a year, the official plans are finally underway in redeveloping a stretch of beachfront properties located along Miami Beach’s northern shore, a stretch also known as Ocean Terrace.

The vision for the new Ocean Terrace will involve restoring the various classic facades that are found throughout the street that neighbors the sea. There are also plans to build a residential tower comprised of 58 rooms set back from Ocean Terrace as well as Collins Avenue. Additional historical restoration is also in store for a pair of hotels that would connect to create a single 76 room operation. Furthermore, there are plans that also call for more than 15,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space on Ocean Terrace’s ground floor.

Ocean Terrace has earned a reputation as something of a quieter counterpart to its always active cousin Ocean Drive in South Beach. The plans are part of a longtime effort to revitalize the relatively sleepy North Beach area.

Are you someone who likes to visit the North Beach area or walk through Ocean Terrace? If so, how do you feel about these plans to breathe new life into the area? Feel free to share in the comments.

The temperatures throughout South Florida have been quite toasty. One of the best ways to stay cool is with a nice drink, and there are plenty of places throughout Miami Beach to enjoy great drinks and equally great company.

Ted’s Hideaway can be found in the trendy South of Fifth area. If you’re seeking something no frills that focuses on the drinks and the ambiance, this place has you covered. Play a friendly match at the pool table and relax as you unwind in a setting that’s all about atmosphere. When you’re done you can walk right over to Ocean Drive.

Purdy Lounge is just south of the Sunset Islands not far from the waters of Biscayne Bay. The space is unusually large and there are plenty of welcoming couches for you to kick back and sip on a cocktail. “Dirty Purdy” as it’s referred to by locals frequently hosts musical events so there is always something exciting to do.

Mac’s Club Deuce is a South Beach staple that’s been around for more than four decades. Located on 14th Street, American chef and television personality Anthony Bourdain is known to frequent this Miami Beach mainstay which he considers one of his favorites.

Miami Beach Implements Rules for Spring Break

beachMillennialsIt’s that time of the year again, ladies and gentlemen! No, it’s not the holiday season. We’re talking about spring break when hundreds of college students take their time off to visit the barrier island in search of lots of fun and sun.

While South Beach is among the top choices when it comes to spring break tourism, this year city officials are taking a stronger stance against the spring mayhem. The effort isn’t aimed at deterring all of the fun as it is making Miami Beach and the streets of the city a little safer for everyone, including non-spring breakers.

Until April 16th, visitors to Miami Beach will be banned from bringing the following to the beach: tables, tents, coolers, and inflatable devices. Additionally, there will be no excessively loud or amplified music allowed nor will there be any direct of indirect consumption of alcohol allowed on beach property. To keep crowds in check, beach access will be cut off once certain limits are reached.

Mobile license plate readers have also been installed at the Julia Tuttle and MacArthur Causeways. These readers will scan license plates and check them against law enforcement databases.

With these rules in effect, spring break in Miami Beach should be a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone.
