American Crime Story Films in South Beach

soBe

Have you been to South Beach lately? If so, you may have noticed some filming going on near the former home of late Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace. Versace was murdered nearly twenty years ago by Andrew Cunanan. The crime is serving as the inspiration for the third season of American Crime Story, an anthology series airing on the FX network expected to air in 2018.

The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story premiered last year and won multiple Emmy Awards. Each season focuses on different true events and will be followed by a Hurricane Katrina focused season this year.

One of the people behind the creation of American Crime Story is Ryan Murphy, an Emmy Award-winning screenwriter, director, and producer. Murphy has ties to South Florida as he is a University of Miami graduate and once served as a writer for the Miami Herald. Some of the series he has created or produced include Nip/Tuck, Glee, American Horror Story, and this year’s Feud.

American Crime Story crews will be filming in various parts of Miami Beach including Ocean Drive, near the North Beach Bandshell, and more. Keep an eye out and you may spot some of the actors like Darren Criss or Academy Award winner Penelope Cruz who will portray Versace’s sister Donatella.

Keep Things Classic with These Great Diners

diner

With all of the new restaurants opening each week in South Florida, sometimes it’s best to keep it old school. While new eateries have their appeal, the feel of an old school diner serving great food can hit just the right spot. We have a couple of suggestions you may wish to consider.

Did you ever watch the classic cartoon series Scooby Doo? If so, you may be familiar with the iconic Mystery Machine. If you’ve ever driven through North Miami Beach you may have noticed a vehicle resembling the Mystery Machine parked in front of an even more noticeable red barn exterior. This is the home of Ham & Eggery, a classic diner known for its lunch and dinner as well as its extensive list of breakfast classics. The diner is located at 530 NE 167th Street.

Over in the MiMo area, Jimmy’s Eastside Diner on Biscayne Boulevard keeps things classic despite being located in a contemporary neighborhood, from its menu offerings to its retro décor. If you ever watched the Academy Award-winning film Moonlight shot right here in Miami, you may have noticed the diner.

To the north of Jimmy’s Eastside Diner is Jimmy’s Place, a North Miami diner that’s been around for decades. The décor has remained practically undisturbed since the opening and the waitresses are known for keeping things appealingly sassy. Affordable and tasty? Sounds good to us!

Miami Beach Rolls out Its Body Camera Program

bodyCamera

Practically everyone who has spent time in Miami Beach knows that trying to find a parking spot is a challenge, to say the least. Getting ticketed for parking is no fun, either. However, if you find yourself losing your cool with an officer because of a ticket, it may be best to take a deep breath and relax. Miami Beach has implemented a citywide body camera rollout.

Civilian employees as well as police officers will be wearing body cameras, and currently just over 140 of them are already wearing them. These body cameras will be used by code enforcement officers to document violations as well as the city fire department to inspect nightclubs.

The body camera initiative received the city commission vote back in 2014 and was originally aimed at parking enforcement officers that often have to deal with combative drivers or even residents. The cameras are also intended as a way to eliminate or at least reduce public corruption.

While body cameras as useful for officers, there is some controversy behind the decision to also mandate that civilian employees wear the cameras. Unlike officers, these people do not have the authority to arrest someone.

Putting all of that aside, the new body cameras should go a long way in making areas like South Beach an even safer and nicer place to live.

South Florida’s Condo Market Adjusts as Necessary

soBeCondos

It’s been a year of challenge for brokers and developers working in South Florida’s pre-construction condo market. Miami has seen something of a slowdown, forcing sellers and agents to adjust their pricing and strategies to get those lucrative deals closed.

Per recent reports, condominiums spent a greater amount of time on the market and were sold at lower prices in 2016. Sellers have had to shift their expectations. Among Miami Beach’s luxury condos, the difference between listing and closing price increased by just over twelve percent during the fourth quarter of last year. This change is more than seven percent compared to 2015. At a building like the acclaimed Faena House, units were selling for about $12.5 million, a considerable discount from the original asking price of $16.5 million.

So far, it appears 2017 is shaping up to be a buyer’s market. With the glut of inventory available, prices may continue to go down to try and reduce the surplus. This, coupled with the possibility of an increase in interest rates, may draw the attention of buyers, albeit at a lower price point.

Even with the surplus of inventory, developers continue to launch sales for new projects in Miami and Miami Beach.

What’s Public and Private in Miami Beach?

getoffmylawn

A major reason why people choose to live or vacation in Miami Beach is the beach itself. Arguably among the best in all of the southeastern United States, the weather plus the nearness to the ocean drives many people to the barrier island.

Many condominiums plus hotels advertise having easy access to the beach, often within walking distance. While this is a major perk, it can sometimes lead to confusion. Take for example the case of a woman who regularly enjoyed reading a book while sitting on the sunny sands. As the beach became crowded, the woman was forced to set her chair elsewhere but was told she had to move because the beach was private. The situation raises eyebrows and might leave you wondering whether there is such a thing as private beaches on the barrier island.

The simple answer is no. After escalating the issue, it was determined that the employee who informed the woman she had to move was in the wrong. Not only are the beaches in Miami Beach public, so are the majority of them in Florida. In fact, only a few beaches are genuinely private, but these are located in areas like Golden Beach and Hillsboro Beach. Keep this in mind next time someone tries to tell you that you can’t sit in a certain spot because it’s private.

New Names at Ultra Music Festival

ultra-music-festival-logo-1

The high energy of Ultra Music Festival returns this weekend to Miami, and with it comes several familiar and perhaps not so familiar names joining the lineup. Let’s take a look at some newcomers making their Ultra debut this year.

Anna is a DJ born in Brazil and based in Berlin. She has received lots of coverage for her unique fusion of tech-house and techno, with Mixmag going as far as calling her “one of Brazil’s finest exports”. The mononymous DJ has remixed tracks for Australian musicians NERVO and continues to earn the respect of dance music lovers.

Electronic music fans may already be familiar with Zhu. The Chinese-American producer and DJ kicked off his career in 2014 anonymously and his fame has only skyrocketed. His single “Faded” from his debut EP The Nightday was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. He released his full-length debut album Generationwhy last year.

Chris Liebing has made appearances at the Winter Music Conference but this will be his first Ultra appearance as part of the Resistance lineup. As a musical curator, Liebing founded his own record label as well as podcast and is responsible for discovering acts like Drumcell and Monoloc.
