A New Art Basel Awaits

November is right around the corner, which means the holiday season will soon be upon us. Also synonymous with the holidays is Art Basel Miami Beach. In case you’ve never heard of this popular event, it is a global art fair held in Hong Kong, Basel, Switzerland, and right here in Miami Beach. The first Art Basel came to life in 1970 as a cooperative effort between Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner, and Balz Hilt. Its goal was to present work by lesser-known contemporary artists while grabbing the attention of art devotees, galleries, and collectors.

It wasn’t until 2002 that Art Basel made its way back to Miami and the 2010 version will be the most exciting one yet. An enhanced focus will be placed on Latin American and U.S. exhibitions, with over half of the 250+ exhibitors coming from the two continents. Also, this year’s Art Basel will have a brand new section showcasing large-scale artwork.

Are you interested in checking out Art Basel? Tickets are $65 for individuals or $45 for senior citizens and students attending for one day. Four day tickets can also be purchased for $145. Tickets can be bought online or you can buy them on opening day (December 5th) at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

The World’s Best Pizza Is Coming to Miami Beach

Just about everyone can appreciate a good slice of pizza. However, not all pizza is created equal and you’ve probably had a slice or two that you weren’t too fond of. Miami Beach has no shortage of pizza places that have received high ratings, but they may soon be overshadowed by the world’s best pizza.

In Naples, Italy, Gino Sorbillo is something of a celebrity. His pizza is often regarded as being the best in the country and apparently, it’s so good it was even blessed by none other than Pope Francis himself! Despite the tremendous praise, Sorbillo takes an uncomplicated approach to making his highly-regarded pies.

If you’re curious to see whether the lofty praise heaped on Gino Sorbillo is true, you’ll soon be able to try it for yourself when Sorbillo opens its doors right here in Miami Beach on Wednesday, October 30. The restaurant menu will have a variety of Neapolitan-style pizza in classic and seasonal varieties plus foods like pasta, calzones. And more. In keeping with the tradition of the other locations in Tokyo, New York, Naples, and Milan, the pizzas ranging from $16 to $28 will be limited to 300 per day on a first-come, first-serve basis. This limit does not apply to the rest of the menu.

Sorbillo will be located at 100 Collins Avenue.

Where to Enjoy Stone Crab in Miami Beach

Today, the classic Miami Beach restaurant Joe’s Stone Crab on Washington Avenue is celebrating its 106th season, welcoming diners looking to try some of the best stone crabs in South Florida. Since it doesn’t accept reservations, you may run into difficulties in getting a table. In the meantime, you can try a couple of other places serving stone crab and great seafood.

Gianni’s at the Villa Casa Casuarina on Ocean Drive is found in the mansion that was once the home of late fashion designer Gianni Versace. The ambiance is upscale and you can dine on chilled stone crab claws.

Also on Washington Avenue is Lobster Bar Sea Grille. Starting tomorrow, it will start serving jumbo stone crab claws and even colossal ones when they are available. If you’d prefer to explore the Time Out Market food hall, Salt & Brine is a raw bar that is celebrating the stone crab season for the first time.

Stripsteak by Michael Mina on Collins Avenue is found in the popular Fontainebleau Miami Beach. Try some of the freshly caught stone crab claws caught daily available in jumbo, colossal, and even supercolossal sizes served with the restaurant’s signature dijonnaise.

Get Ready for the 106th Season of Joe’s Stone Crab

One of the best times of the year in South Florida is the stone crab season and one of the best places to celebrate it is at Joe’s Stone Crab. This iconic Miami Beach mainstay will be opening its doors to celebrate its 106th season on October 15 at 5 pm sharp.

Joe’s Stone Crab is named after Joe Weiss and its history goes back to 1913. Born in Hungary and living in New York, Weiss arrived in Miami Beach with the hopes of finding some relief for his asthma. Joe and his wife originally opened a shack focused on seafood located on Collins Avenue. After an ichthyologist noticed the many stone crabs in the area, he brought them to the attention of Joe Weiss, asking whether they were suitable to eat.

Today, Joe’s Stone Crab is notable for attracting notable names including actors, politicians, and athletes. Despite its popularity and many years of operation, it remains a a family-owned and operated restaurant. A notable aspect of the restaurant is its stance on reservations, which it does not do. Hence, anyone who wants to dine there should arrive early or they may have to wait several hours before they can be seated.

The Faena Festival Returns

Art Basel is perhaps Miami Beach’s largest and best known art-related event but if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find there is much more going on. This year, for example, the city will welcome the Faena Festival for the second time around.

Unlike Art Basel which focuses on a richly broad array of art in different mediums, the Faena Festival concentrates on spirituality and ritual. This year’s event is being dubbed “The Last Supper” and will bring a host of installations, videos, performances, and commissions depicting topics like religion, food, and more. Some of the names visitors can expect to see include Gabriel Chaile, Zhang Huan, and Myrlande Constant, to name a few.

Speaking of Myrlande Constant, her voodoo flags will adorn the lobby of the upscale Faena Hotel. Zhang Huan’s work will include a pair of buddha sculptures made from incense ash and aluminum, the former expected to be disintegrated on the beach as a symbol of impermanence. Artist Yael Bartana of Israel will showcase her 2013 film Inferno.

There is no cost to attend the Faena Festival which runs from December 2nd through the 8th, coinciding with the Art Basel festivities. The festival will take place across different venues.

Where in Miami Beach Were Your Favorite Shows and Movies Filmed?

It’s well-known Miami Beach is frequently used as a backdrop for numerous films and television shows. Have you ever been curious as to where exactly certain scenes, movies, or series were shot in the barrier island? If so, the city’s interactive “Filmed on the Beach” digital tour will be right up your alley.

The “Filmed on the Beach” tour is comprised of a trio of digital maps broken down into the three city “sections”: North Beach, Mid Beach, and South Beach. These maps are littered with purple icons that each provide the location plus the production that is being or was filmed there. Not surprisingly, the largest number of icons are found in the South Beach area and you’ll find icons throughout the entire city for the popular television 1980s crime drama series “Miami Vice”.

Some notable spots and productions you’ll notice include South Pointe Park which served as the scene for the conclusion of “2 Fast 2 Furious” released back in 2003. History buffs may remember the Corsair Hotel which was featured in the 1967 film “Tony Rome” starring Frank Sinatra. More recently, the late Gianni Versace’s home Casa Casuarina was prominently featured in last year’s Emmy Award-winning limited series “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”.

The Legend of Jet Pilot Comes to Miami Beach

Take a minute or two to read about the story of Sam, a fabled jet pilot who brazenly the Pacific Islands and did so while bopping his head to tunes by Harry Belafonte. He was so entertained he didn’t realize he was flying into the smoke of a volcano! Sam lived through the ordeal and despite the wreckage, he emerged with a bottle of rum intact. Sam’s story would be passed on to generations and today, the story continues at the appropriately named Jet Pilot.

All joking aside, there may not be much truth to Sam’s story except for the fact that Jet Pilot does exist. The pop-up tiki bar will soon welcome patrons at the Kimpton Angler’s Hotel and it will “pop up” there every Friday starting this week on August 16. The Sixth Street side of the hotel will be transformed into a tempting tiki oasis featuring flamingos, bamboo umbrellas, torches, and so much more. Should you decide to visit, make sure to give the Jet Pilot cocktail made with ingredients like grapefruit juice, absinthe, and cinnamon a shot.

Jet Pilot’s tiki bar experience will remain in Miami Beach until Thanksgiving before Sam the jet pilot’s story goes down in history to make way for the arrival of Sippin’ Santa, just in time for the holidays.

If you’re interested in visiting Jet Pilot at Kimpton Angler’s Hotel, its address is 660 Washington Avenue.
