Miami Beach Has a New Plan for Ocean Drive

Navigating around on Ocean Drive’s sidewalks can be a tricky process, especially on the weekends when activity is typically high with pedestrians. To try and alleviate some of the “congestion”, Miami Beach is launching a new experimental initiative of sorts aimed at making South Beach’s perennially popular thoroughfare a little more pedestrian friendly.

Beginning the first weekend of September, Miami Beach intends to block off a single traffic lane so pedestrians can safely utilize it. The initiative will essentially expand the sidewalk by five feet which should make it easier to navigate as well as improving safety. This new experiment will remain in effect throughout the rest of the month. The way it will work is Ocean Drive will become a one-way southbound lane extending from Fifth to 11th Street. For those wondering about the fewer street parking spots, the city is encouraging drivers to take advantage of the municipal garages located at Seventh, 13th and 16th streets.

For those who may be concerned about these changes, it’s worth emphasizing that this new experiment will only be happening during the weekends. The one exception is Labor Day weekend where Ocean Drive’s one-way lane will remain in effect until the early morning hours on Tuesday.

Miami Beach Welcomes Artichoke Basille’s Pizza

Have you ever heard of Artichoke Basille’s Pizza? It may sound unfamiliar to Miami Beach residents, but in New York, it’s a different story. The eatery has earned something of a legendary status in The Big Apple, with people standing line until 3 am to grab one of the slices at this feverishly popular place.

And now, the legend will make its debut right here in Miami Beach.

Artichoke Basille’s Pizza is scheduled to open its doors at Ricky’s South Beach on 16th Street towards the end of the month. The eatery is the brainchild of cousins and best friends Sal Basille and Francis Garcia, opening in 2008. After joining forces with a pair of individuals well-versed in the club industry, Artichoke expanded rapidly and now has ten locations throughout New York City. It has been featured on numerous food-related shows and has gained a loyal following. Famous names like guitarist, singer, and songwriter Keith Richards have become major fans.

Besides pizza, Artichoke Basille’s also sells calzones, salads, homemade bread sticks, and more. If the popularity of its New York location is any indication, you can expect a major turnout when it makes its debut later this month. Make sure to get in line early!

Miami Beach Rolls out Its Body Camera Program

bodyCamera

Practically everyone who has spent time in Miami Beach knows that trying to find a parking spot is a challenge, to say the least. Getting ticketed for parking is no fun, either. However, if you find yourself losing your cool with an officer because of a ticket, it may be best to take a deep breath and relax. Miami Beach has implemented a citywide body camera rollout.

Civilian employees as well as police officers will be wearing body cameras, and currently just over 140 of them are already wearing them. These body cameras will be used by code enforcement officers to document violations as well as the city fire department to inspect nightclubs.

The body camera initiative received the city commission vote back in 2014 and was originally aimed at parking enforcement officers that often have to deal with combative drivers or even residents. The cameras are also intended as a way to eliminate or at least reduce public corruption.

While body cameras as useful for officers, there is some controversy behind the decision to also mandate that civilian employees wear the cameras. Unlike officers, these people do not have the authority to arrest someone.

Putting all of that aside, the new body cameras should go a long way in making areas like South Beach an even safer and nicer place to live.

Have a Power Lunch in Miami Beach

powerLunch

If you’re a businessperson, you know that the day is not complete without having a power lunch. Whether it’s making a deal with colleagues or discussing productive ideas with co-workers, the place you decide to have the power lunch will play a role in how effective the lunch is, and we have a few recommendations.

You can have a weekend power lunch at perennial favorite Juvia on Lincoln Road for a mere $23. Try the Beef Carpaccio or maybe the Kale & Farro Salad, or one of the many dessert options. If you’d rather not deal with the all of the crowds on Lincoln Road you can always check out Yardbird Southern Table & Bar on Lenox Avenue. Every weekday from 11 am to 4 pm you can enjoy a three-course menu with food options like fried chicken, fried green tomato BLT, or deep fried Oreos for dessert.

Tanuki is located on Alton Road and it’s the first Tanuki to debut in the United States. Similar to Juvia, a three-course lunch menu for only $23 is available, however it’s available daily from noon to 3 pm. Tuna rolls, wonton chicken salad, and marinated Sichuan beef are among the options available.

Estiatorio Milos by Costas Spiliadis is located in the SoFi area on 1st Street, offering a three-course menu for $25. Guests can choose from food items like lamb chops, thyme honey infused Greek yogurt, grilled octopus, and more.

Check out Sting This Saturday

This Saturday, one of the venerable acts in music will make an appearance at the Fillmore in Miami Beach. The artist’s real name is Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, but you probably know him better by the stage name Sting.

Sting is currently touring in support of his latest album 57th & 9th released last year. You can catch him at 8 pm and see for yourself why he is among the most talented musicians and songwriters.

Miami Beach Says Hello to Trader Joe’s

traderJoes

Have you ever been to Trader Joe’s? The neighborhood grocery chain is well-known for being a competitor to stores like Whole Foods and Fresh Market, boasting an extensive range of private label items including frozen entrees, imported foods, beverages, and plenty of basics like bread, milk, and eggs. Most of these products are priced lower than Trader Joe’s primary competitors. The chain has been mentioned several times in publications like Consumer Reports for being one of the best supermarket chains in the country as well as for its excellent customer service.

Currently, there is only one Trader Joe’s in Miami-Dade County, located all the way in Pinecrest but that may soon change. The chain recently announced its plans to open a second Miami-Dade location right here in Miami Beach, on the corner of West Avenue and 17th Street to be exact. The store will be part of an upcoming five-story mixed-use development appropriately called 17 West.

Named after its founder Joe Coulombe. Trader Joe’s originally went by the name of Pronto Market when it opened in 1958. It wasn’t until 1967 when it changed its name to Trader Joe’s, opening its first store bearing the new name in Pasadena, California which remains in operation.
