Memorial Day weekend is upon us, which means Miami Beach will be seeing tons of activity as people head to the sunny sands for a suntan, to Ocean Drive for a drink, to Lincoln Road for a great meal, or to one of the many free events in store. To deal with the expected crowds, Miami Beach Police is taking several measures to keep things orderly and under control, including traffic.
To get around Miami Beach this weekend without too much stress there are several things to keep in mind. A large array of license plate readers are being used to scan each and every tag that intends on visiting Miami Beach. These readers will be distributed in a variety of ways including at certain intersections or on top of law enforcement vehicles. As a result, all traffic on the causeways will be funneled to a single lane.
For those planning on visiting Ocean Drive, there is currently no vehicular traffic allowed and it will remain this way until 7 am on Tuesday. Beginning tomorrow, South Beach will be turned into a traffic loop, meaning vehicles will only be allowed to travel northbound on Collins Avenue to 16th Street. Traffic will then continue west to Washington Avenue which will become a southbound only lane until 5th Street. There will be limited access to residential areas and locals will be required to show proof of residency should they wish to enter.

The Rise of Micro-Units

Would you be willing to spend more than $250,000 for the chance to live in the middle of Miami Beach in a studio apartment measuring 350 square feet? If it seems interesting, the rise of micro-units is a growing trend you may wish to look into.
True to their name, micro-units are tiny apartments that come furnished and are aimed at people that wish to live in some of the trendiest neighborhoods but cannot afford to pay the sometimes exorbitant market rates to live there. Real estate developers are placing their bets on the concept and there are already a few of them in the works. A seventy-unit residential/hotel project on Collins Avenue called the 6080 Boutique Hotel is scheduled to be complete in July and it will have units ranging from 350 to 900 square feet in size for a pair of bedrooms. This project is only one of many that are scheduled to debut in Miami as well as in neighboring Broward County.
The micro-unit developments are intended to seize upon zoning and building codes that allow for greater density and better use of land while lower requirements in regards to parking. Building costs are also more than fifteen percent lower. These developments are also rich in amenities, boasting pools, fitness centers, play spaces, and more.

Museum of Ice Cream Isn’t Going Anywhere Just Yet

For the fourth time now, Miami Beach’s feverishly popular Museum of Ice Cream (MOIC) has extended its stay. Instead of closing near the end of the month like it was originally intended, the museum will be sticking around until Sunday, May 13 just in time to celebrate Mother’s Day.
Since its opening, MOIC has maintained a strong appeal and has consistently sold out of tickets. The museum generated headlines when it was fined by the city due to its plastic “sprinkle pool” which was creating an environmental hazard. The pool is one of the many highlights of the museum and it has since been moved towards the beginning to reduce the chances of sprinkles being left behind.
A visit to MOIC isn’t going to enrich visitors with a wealth of new knowledge regarding ice cream, but what it may lack in knowledge it more than makes up for in its picture taking opportunities. The museum is packed with opportunities to snap plenty of social media worthy images, from the paraphernalia to the photo booths figuratively begging visitors to share an Instagram picture with the #MuseumofIceCream hashtag.
Museum of Ice Cream is located in the Faena District at 3400 Collins Avenue. Tickets cost $38 and are available exclusively online.

Check out These Music and Film Events

It’s only Tuesday, but it’s never too early to start making plans for the weekend. To help you figure out what to do, here are a couple of suggestions kicking off on Friday.
We’ll begin with singer-songwriter and actress Demi Lovato who will be bringing her musical talents to the American Airlines Arena as part of her Tell Me You Love Me World Tour. The pop princess will be joined by R&B singer Kehlani who released her debut album SweetSexySavage to critical acclaim last year. Lovato will also be joined by record producer DJ Khaled, who achieved massive success last year with his Rihanna collaboration “Wild Thoughts”.
Also on Friday, the Coral Gables Art Cinema will screen the various films of acclaimed film director, producer, and screenwriter Wes Anderson. Thee films include The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, and Moonrise Kingdom.
For those who can’t get enough of vinyl and wish to continue expanding their collection, the Miami Record Fair is happening on Saturday at Gramps in the Wynwood area. The fair begins at noon and there is no cost to attend. Enjoy the live music, have some pizza, sip on a cocktail, and trade records with fellow collectors.

All Set for the Winter Music Conference

Anyone concerned whether the Winter Music Conference (WMC) was going to happen this year can rest assured that yes, it is indeed happening. The three-day event will be held at Miami Beach’s posh Faena Forum, though this year’s event will be comparably smaller in scale when it comes to length. Previous WMC conferences have lasted as long as six days in the past.
The WMC is not to be confused with the other events that take place during the massively popular Miami Music Week like Ultra. Instead, WMC is a music industry gathering involving producers, agents, publicists, musicians, just about anyone that has something to do with the music industry and is looking to network. Some of the panels in store for WMC include licensing and streaming, music publicity, and more. This year’s WMC will also mark the return of the International Dance Awards, featuring just over twenty categories including Best Live Performance and Best Club. The public is welcome to vote in the categories.
The 2018 Winter Music Conference kicks off on March 20 and continues until March 22. Presale tickets are currently available for $195 until the 19th before they increase to $249. The Faena Forum’s address is 3300-3398 Collins Avenue.

Experience These Miami Beach Hotels

Miami Beach hotels nowadays are far more than just another fine place to spend a few nights. Two of the city’s classic hotels are not only welcoming guests but also keeping things fresh by offering a slew of exciting new offerings for those that want to try something new.
The Betsy on Ocean Drive in South Beach underwent an expansion back in 2016, annexing Collins Avenue’s classic Carlton Hotel. The merger of sorts resulted in more than 120 rooms featuring a distinct Art Deco and Colonial style. The alley between the two properties is now the home of the similarly named The Alley, a casual gelateria and pizza restaurant that opened just in time for Art Basel last year. Over at The Carlton lobby, you’re going to find a Panther Coffee outpost.
In 2017, the Carillon Miami Wellness Resort on Collins Avenue unveiled a massive renovation. The new Carillon boasts more than 140 lavish all-suite rooms and the hotel itself boasts over 600 feet of oceanfront plus a huge 65,000+ square foot spa. Even since the days it went by the name of Canyon Ranch, Carillon continues its focus on health and wellness, with plenty of facilities centered around wellness and nutrition. Dine at The Strand Bar & Grill or check out the exclusive Carillon Spa & Beach Club, open to a maximum of 200 members.

The Best Brunch in Miami Beach
Looking to enjoy some brunch in the coming weeks? Every once in a while we like to cover some of the best spots to grab the best of breakfast and lunch, and that’s exactly what we’ll be doing in today’s blog. Let’s begin!
Washington Avenue’s Stubborn Seed has quickly evolved into a local favorite. Every weekend between 11 am to 3 pm, you can try the a la carte brunch menu devised by Jeremy Ford, a former winner of the Emmy-winning reality competition series Top Chef. Try the chai waffles or maybe the citrus cured salmon. For dessert, you can’t go wrong with some strawberry doughnuts.
Forte dei Marmi is one spot we’ve mentioned on previous occasions. At this Ocean Drive mainstay, you can try the $55 pre-fix brunch on Sundays featuring a little bit of everything. Have the grilled veggies from the antipasti bar and choose an entree like French omelet before ending the brunch with the dessert buffet.
Also on Washington Avenue, Lobster Bar Sea Grille has a $49 three-course prixe fix brunch available every weekend beginning at 11:30 am until 3:30 pm. Drink as many Bellinis, Bloody Marys, Prosecco, or Mimosas as you want while enjoying seafood delicacies like charred octopus.

Open House on the Horizon? Make Your Buyers Feel Welcome

An open house can be the “make or break” moment, the factor that decides whether an interested buyer chooses to purchase the home or decides it’s not what they want. Hence, it pays to make that first impression one that’s memorable and works in your favor.
First impressions are everything. Could the home use a fresh coat of paint? Maybe the yard is in dire need of some landscaping. Considering the exterior is the first thing a prospective buyer will see, it’s imperative that the home is clean and eye-catching. With that in mind, clean everything and then clean some more. You may be surprised where buyers might decide to look.
Consider home staging. Home staging involves strategically placing furniture and décor to increase the home’s appeal while also paying close attention to color schemes. If you’re not the interior decorating type, home staging is a proven method of ensuring your home looks and feels inviting while minimizing the odds of turning off buyers that may not agree with your personal tastes.
Refrain from getting personal. Speaking of personal tastes, you don’t want to include anything that’s personal to you, whether that’s family pictures, a work of art your child may have drawn, anything that’s tied to you. The goal is to make it easier for a buyer to visualize calling the property their home, not yours.
Let the sunshine in. Make use of as much natural light as possible. Open the curtain and blinds and keep the lights on even if it’s bright outside. Light not only makes the home look more inviting, it can also create the illusion of greater space.

Miami Beach Wants Its Own Coachella

One of the most popular musical events is the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival held in Indio, California. The event brings together musical artists from various genres and it also includes sculptures and art installations. The event has drawn major names in the past, including singer and songwriter Madonna.
Miami Beach is now looking to start its own three-day festival as a direct response to the popularity of Coachella. “Miami Beach Pop Festival” would take place beginning on December 14th through the 16th at 10th and 5th Street. Producers behind the event are aiming to attract a widely diverse array of artists, from Elton John to Bruno Mars, Nicki Minaj, Luis Fonsi, and Jimmy Buffet.
Despite the eagerness of producers to bring Miami Beach Pop Festival to the barrier island, the city has yet to make a decision and is relying on the public before making a move. The event may draw a negative reaction from residents that already have to deal with Miami Beach’s traffic congestion and the large crowds when major events are in town.
Do you think Miami Beach deserves its own equivalent to Coachella? How do you feel about the future possibility of Miami Beach Pop Festival?

Art Deco Weekend’s Exciting Events

This Friday, Miami Beach will celebrate the 41st annual Art Deco Weekend courtesy of the Miami Design Preservation League. The complimentary, open air event takes place over three days and typically draws thousands of people to visit Ocean Drive to check out the various guided tours, shows, and live music. In fact, there is so much to see and do, we’re providing some suggestions to narrow down your choices.
The Bark Deco Dog Show will return for its third outing on Sunday at 1 pm at the Art Deco Welcome Center. As you might guess, it’s a showcase of the best pooches, with competitions ranging from the “waggiest” tail to the most original costume and the most “so Miami”. You’ll also be able to adopt a four-legged friend at the event.
For fans of classic cars, snap an Instagram worthy selfie with vehicles from as far back as the early 1900s during the Classic Car Show. The show kicks off at 10 am to 3 pm on Saturday and Sunday at 5th Street and Ocean Drive.
Return to the glory days of the 1920s during The 2nd Annual Jazz Age at Art Deco VIP happening at Lummus Park. Attendees are encouraged to dress in 1920s outfits while dancing to live jazz music performed by names like Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra, Elliot Sneider, the Troy Anderson Quartet, and more.
