The polls will remain open until 7 pm. For those that want to watch the election results as they happen, several places will be hosting election parties. Let’s take a look at a few.

MTV is spurring the younger crowd to get involved in the voting process and it’s also hosting its own MTV Election Afterparty happening at Miami Dade College Kendall Campus. The red carpet kicks off at 6 pm before the party begins at 7 pm until 10 pm. While admission is free, do keep in mind that you must be of legal voting age to attend.

The University of Miami (UM) in Coral Gables is hosting the University of Miami Extravaganza Watch Party spearheaded by student initiative called Get Out the Vote which encourages students to become involved in the election process. Snag a Role in West Side Story

Remember West Side Story? Millions of people have grown up with the Broadway show and musical film, and now legendary director Steven Spielberg is looking to bring the classic back to the big screen. While actor Ansel Elgort has already been cast to play the role of Tony, there is still no word on who will portray the role of Maria. However, the film is currently seeking actors to help fill out the cast, and the auditions are happening right here at the Miami City Ballet.

For those unfamiliar with West Side Story, it began its life as a Broadway musical, debuting in 1957. Inspired by Shakespeare’s iconic play Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story uses the Upper West Side of New York City as its setting during the 1950s. It tells the story of a pair of rival teenage gangs of different ethnicities called the Sharks and Jets and the romance that develops between the aforementioned Tony and Maria. The show ran for more than 700 performances and was nominated for six Tony Awards. In 1961, the musical was adapted into a film and received eleven Academy Award nominations, winning nearly all of them including Best Picture.

For those interested in auditioning for a role in Spielberg’s West Side Story, they should be individuals with a strong dance background between the ages of 15 and 25 that are also able to sing. Auditions will be taking place on October 29.

Whet Your Seafood Appetite in Miami Beach

The South Beach Seafood Festival begins next week and we’re all excited to attend one of the many events in store. For those of us, that just can’t wait that long, there are a couple of new seafood places in Miami Beach you can try in the meantime.

Andina Miami Beach on Alton Road features a mix of Peruvian and Latin American dishes straight from the coast of Peru plus the highlands of the Andes. Seafood lovers may wish to try the ceviche or the grilled octopus. The restaurant currently has a five-star rating on Yelp and more than twenty reviews, so it’s safe to say the food is quite good.

Over on Lincoln Road, La Cerveceria De Barrio is both a traditional Mexican food spot plus a bar featuring a largely seafood-based menu. It is the first location in the country, after originally making its debut in its native Mexico City back in 2006. Guests can try dishes like seafood carpaccio, shrimp stew, plus a raw bar featuring oysters and clams. La Cerveceria De Barrio opens at 11:30 and closes late.

The Cuban food hall El Palacio de los Jugos is on Jefferson Avenue and is part of a larger chain of restaurants found throughout Miami. True to its name, it serves a variety of juices as well as seafood like paella, shrimp, and grilled salmon. There are also sandwiches to try if you prefer a non-pescetarian menu.

Famous Couple Eyes Miami Beach

It may only be a matter of time before Miami Beach welcomes a high-profile, famous couple as its new residents. Power couple David and Victoria Beckham are currently shopping for a new home right here in the barrier island after spending time in Miami Beach during the spring and summer. In case you have no idea who we are talking about, let’s give you some background.

David Beckham is a retired English soccer player who played for various teams during his athletic career, including Real Madrid, the LA Galaxy, and Manchester United. He has the distinction of being the first English player to achieve league title wins in four different countries. After an illustrious career spanning twenty years and nineteen major trophies, Beckham retired in 2013.

Victoria Beckham achieved fame as a member of the highly successful female pop group Spice Girls. Their debut album Spice released in 1996 remains the biggest selling album by a female group in the world. Since the group’s heyday, Beckham has achieved success as a fashion designer.

The Beckhams (married since 1999) have four children and are reportedly seeking mansion with at least six bedrooms here in Miami Beach or potentially in the upscale Fisher Island or one of the six Venetian Islands. If they do move to South Florida, they will likely achieve a level of fame similar to Miami Beach’s other power couples like longtime residents Emilio and Gloria Estefan.

Waterfront Dining for the Weekend

There is dining and then there is dining by the water. The two experiences are vastly different and since it is Friday, we’re highlighting a couple of places where you can enjoy a delectable waterfront meal this weekend.

We’ll kick things off right here in Miami Beach with a longtime favorite in the South Beach area: Smith & Wollensky. Besides its much-acclaimed selection of food items (including some fantastic steaks), dining al fresco at Smith & Wollensky is one of the best ways to catch the glorious South Florida sunset.

Moving over to Di Lido Island in the Venetian Islands, Lido Restaurant & Bayside Grill is found inside the perennially trendy Standard Hotel. Much like Smith & Wollensky, you’re bound to come across fellow diners checking out the serene vistas of Biscayne Bay while sipping on some rosé as they keep cool underneath the vivid umbrellas.

At the Artisan Beach House over in Bal Harbour, the views are simply gorgeous no matter whether you’re admiring the majestic oceanfront or marveling at Haulover Cut. You’ll find this restaurant tucked away inside the glitzy Ritz-Carlton Bal Harbour.

What are some of your favorite places to dine by the water in South Florida?

The All-New Miami Beach Convention Center Will Soon Debut

The architecture firm overseeing the massive expansion and revamp of the Miami Beach Convention Center recently released some new photos, showcasing a contemporary design capturing the style of South Florida’s perennially stylish barrier island. The new photos also serve as an indicator of the 1,400+ million square foot renovations being close to completion.

For those that haven’t been paying attention, the $620 million project is bringing a smorgasbord of new enhancements and addition to the Miami Beach Convention Center. A quartet of ballrooms will range in size from 10,000 to a whopping 60,000 square feet. There will also be more than 120,000 square feet of meeting spaces, 500,000 square feet dedicated to a food exhibit hall, additional green spaces, better Wi-Fi, and improved safeguards to protect against storms or possible floods.

The convention center revamp started off as an ambitious three year project set to complete next month. However, a couple of last minute situations have tentatively pushed it over to October. The project is expected to be completed in time for this year’s Art Basel event, which is expected to draw well over 60,000 people.

Enjoy a Miami Weekend Summer Brew

There’s something special about drinking some beer and sharing some fun experiences with friends, provided you’re beer drinker of course. With so many different places offering a brew to imbibe, we’re here to tell you about a few of the standouts you may wish to check out this weekend as a way to keep cool from the summer heat. Cheers!

We’ll kick things off right here in Miami Beach with Abbey Brewing Company on 16th Street. Its Immaculate IPV isn’t your typical summer fare yet the Midwest malt and Pacific Northwest hop still provides that extra kick that you just won’t get from something like Hefeweizens.

Concrete Beach Brewery in Miami is among the more well-known places on this list. Its rosé ale is the perfect fusion for those that like their beer and can also appreciate a nice glass of wine. You’ll notice elements of blueberry and Zinfandel grape and a tinge of sweetness. Concrete Beach Brewery’s address is 325 NW 24th Street.

Also in Miami on 24th Street is the famous Wynwood Brewing Company, home of La Rubia, which translates to “The Blonde”. With an alcohol by volume of five percent, it’s an ideal summer brew which combines Czech Saaz hops, German pilsner malts, and more to create a drink that tastes light and crisp.

South Florida has earned a reputation for being a paradise for those wanting to go for a cool swim. With all of the beaches and pools, swimming is a fun activity provided everyone knows how to swim. Children under the age of fourteen are particularly at risk of drowning, but thankfully there are plenty of places offering to teach the little ones how to stay afloat.

The lessons are available for children as young as six months are happening over at Flamingo Park Pool and at Normandy Isle Pool. Registration for the classes begins on Monday.

Children between the ages of six months to five years can also attend classes being held at Scott Rakow Youth Center on Sheridan Avenue, but these classes, as well as those being run by Miami Parks and recreation, are open exclusively to residents of Miami Beach. An adult must accompany children to all lessons and they must also wear swim diapers.

For those that are not residents of Miami Beach, Miami-Dade County Parks and Recreations is hosting Learn2Swim lessons at more than ten locations throughout the county. Prices start at just $10.
